Day 6's required ekphrasis theme is calligraphy. The art of writing beautifully, calligraphy can be as functional as the elaborate lettering on banknotes and shop signs, as high-art as a sansho-style scroll, or as rebellious as a stylized graffitied tag. Whether selling tomatoes, staking out territory, or cleverly ducking a restriction against graven images, calligraphy uses artistic flair to communicate more than the literal meaning of the words on the page. It encourages us to think of hidden meanings, of the boundaries between aesthetic pleasure and intellectual understanding, and the multivalent uses of art.

Day 6's suggested style for writers is stream of consciousness. As cursive script flows form letter to letter, so the narrative device of stream of consciousness attempts to reproduce the free-association and flow of thought.

Optional Art Method Theme
Day 6's suggestion for artists and crafters is monochrome or single-color palettes. Whether black and white like ink on a page, or all different shades of green like a U.S. banknote, take today to explore the options available in a single color.

Optional Pain Theme
Your added pain for Day 6 is forgery and plagiarism. It’s a more insidious kind of art theft. Spaces where uncredited reproduction matters -- academia, publishing, art, fandom -- are at least nominally community spaces where thinkers are meant to build off of one another's ideas and respond in such a way that increases knowledge/art/net communal enjoyment through that response. Just copying doesn't move any conversation forward, it stagnates.

Day 6's suggestion for a joyful work is collaboration. Stand on the shoulders of giants, respond to your peers, join together disparate fields, work together to achieve something impossible to do separately.
